TripSplit Privacy Policy
TripSplit is an offline-first iOS app for recording shared expenses and calculating settlements. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the TripSplit app (the App) or contact the developer for support.
The developer identified as the seller of TripSplit on its Apple App Store product page is the operator responsible for this Policy (TripSplit, we, us, or our). You can reach us through the contact details on the TripSplit App Store product page.
Privacy at a glance
- TripSplit does not require an account and does not operate an app backend.
- Your split and receipt data is stored locally on your device.
- Receipt recognition runs entirely on your device.
- TripSplit does not upload or permanently store receipt images.
- The App contains no advertising, tracking, third-party analytics, or third-party crash-reporting SDKs.
- Purchases of TripSplit Plus are processed by Apple; a purchase-management service provider acting on our behalf validates purchases and manages subscription status.
- We do not sell or rent personal information.
- Information leaves the App only when you deliberately export, copy, or share it, when you make or restore a purchase, when you contact support, or when Apple provides diagnostics under its platform settings and terms.
1. Information handled on your device
TripSplit handles the following information locally to provide the features you request:
- Profile and preferences: the optional display name you enter and whether you have completed onboarding.
- Split information: event names, types, dates, notes, currencies, creation and update dates, and locally generated record identifiers.
- Participant information: participant names, display colors, and which participant represents you on that device.
- Expense and settlement information: receipt titles, item descriptions, amounts, detected totals, payers, item assignments, allocation weights, calculated transfers, and payment status.
- Receipt images and recognized text: an image you capture with the camera or select with Apple's photo picker is processed temporarily in memory to recognize receipt text. TripSplit does not save the source image to its data store or upload it. The recognized receipt details you review and save become part of the local expense information described above.
- Local operational logs: the App records a small, fixed set of event names in the device's system log, such as onboarding completion, split creation, OCR start or completion, receipt save, settlement share, and payment status changes. These logs do not contain names, receipt text, amounts, images, or TripSplit-generated record identifiers.
This information is used only to provide, maintain, secure, and troubleshoot the App on your device. TripSplit does not transmit it to a TripSplit server because no such server exists for the App.
2. Device permissions and system features
TripSplit uses the following iOS features only when you choose to use the related function:
- Camera: to photograph a receipt for on-device recognition. You may enter receipt details manually if you do not grant camera access.
- Photo picker: to let you select a specific receipt image. TripSplit uses Apple's system picker and does not request access to browse your entire photo library.
- Files and share sheet: to import or export a JSON backup, or to share a settlement image or text with an app or person you select.
- Clipboard: to copy settlement text when you tap the copy button. Other apps may be able to read content that you place on the clipboard, subject to iOS controls.
Your use of third-party apps or services selected from the iOS share sheet is governed by their own privacy policies. Review the content before sharing it; settlement cards and backup files can contain participant names and spending information.
3. Information we may receive off your device
Although the App itself has no backend, we may receive limited information in the following situations.
Purchases and subscriptions
Payments for TripSplit Plus are processed by Apple through your Apple ID account. We never receive your name, billing address, or full payment details from a purchase.
To validate purchases and manage subscription status, the App communicates with a purchase-management service provider acting on our behalf. When you open the paywall or make or restore a purchase, the App sends this provider a randomly generated, app-scoped identifier (not your name or Apple ID), purchase and transaction information from Apple, the App version, device model and OS version, locale and currency, and — as with any internet connection — your IP address. The provider uses this information only to provide purchase validation, subscription management, and fraud prevention for TripSplit, under its own privacy policy and its agreement with us. It does not receive your splits, participants, receipts, or settlement data.
Support communications
If you contact us, we receive the information you voluntarily provide, such as your contact details, message, App version, device model, iOS version, and any attachments you choose to send. We use it to respond, investigate a reported problem, protect the App, and keep an appropriate record of the request.
Do not send receipt images, recognized receipt text, participant names, backup files, or settlement amounts unless they are necessary for your request. Please redact personal information before sending screenshots or logs.
Apple diagnostics
Apple may collect crash, performance, and usage diagnostics under your device settings and Apple's terms. Apple may make crash or diagnostic information available to us through App Store Connect or Xcode Organizer so that we can identify and fix technical problems. TestFlight may share crash reports with developers under Apple's TestFlight terms. We use this information only for App stability, security, and troubleshooting, and we do not add user-entered content or TripSplit record identifiers to those reports.
TripSplit's fixed local operational event names are not sent to a TripSplit analytics service and are not used to profile you or measure advertising.
4. Purposes and legal grounds
Where data protection law requires a legal ground, we process information:
- to provide App features you request, process purchases you make, and perform our agreement with you;
- with your consent or at your direction, for example when you grant camera access, share content, send a support request, or enable Apple's optional diagnostic sharing;
- for our legitimate interests in answering support requests and maintaining the security, reliability, and integrity of the App, provided those interests do not override your rights; and
- when necessary to comply with a legal obligation or establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
TripSplit does not use your information for automated decision-making that has legal or similarly significant effects.
5. Disclosure, sale, advertising, and tracking
We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not share it with data brokers and do not use it for targeted advertising or cross-app or cross-site tracking.
Information may be disclosed only:
- to Apple as part of operating and distributing the App, subject to Apple's role and privacy terms;
- to our purchase-management service provider, solely for purchase validation and subscription management, as described above;
- to the recipient or service you deliberately select when exporting, copying, or sharing content;
- to service providers involved in a support channel you choose, solely as needed to transmit or manage your request and subject to their privacy terms; or
- when required by applicable law, legal process, or a valid government request, or when reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, and security.
6. Retention and deletion
- Split and receipt data remains on your device until you delete individual records, use Settings > Delete all data, or uninstall the App. The Settings action removes TripSplit's local split database, but does not remove your display-name and onboarding preferences, backup files you previously exported, or copies you shared. You may change the display name in Settings; uninstalling the App removes its active local preferences from the device.
- Receipt images are held only as long as needed for the active on-device recognition process and are not persisted in TripSplit's data store.
- Exported backups and shared content remain wherever you save or send them until you or the recipient deletes them. They are outside TripSplit's control.
- Device backups managed by Apple may contain a copy of local App data and are controlled through your Apple and device backup settings.
- Local operational logs are retained and removed by iOS according to its system-log behavior and device settings.
- Support communications and diagnostics we receive are kept only as long as reasonably necessary to resolve the issue, maintain security and support records, and meet applicable legal obligations. We then delete or anonymize them where reasonably practicable.
- Purchase and subscription records are kept by Apple under Apple's terms, and by our purchase-management service provider for as long as needed to operate purchases and subscriptions, prevent fraud, and meet legal (including tax and accounting) obligations.
Because TripSplit has no account or backend database, we cannot remotely view, edit, restore, or delete the information stored only on your device.
7. Your choices and rights
You can:
- review and edit saved split information in the App;
- export a machine-readable JSON backup from Settings;
- delete individual splits or receipts;
- delete the local split and receipt database from Settings;
- deny or revoke camera permission in iOS Settings;
- control Apple's diagnostic sharing in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements; and
- choose whether and where to share settlement content or backup files.
Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or portability for personal information that we actually hold, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To make a request, contact us through the TripSplit App Store product page. We may need to verify your request. These rights may be subject to lawful exceptions.
For information stored only on your device, exercise these rights using the App's edit, export, and delete controls because we do not possess that data. You may also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
8. Security
TripSplit minimizes data collection by keeping core information inside the iOS app sandbox and processing receipt images on device. We also avoid logging user-entered content and do not integrate advertising or third-party analytics SDKs. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so you should protect access to your device and handle exported backups and shared settlement content carefully.
9. Children's privacy
TripSplit is a general-audience expense utility and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect children's personal information through an account or backend service. If a child contacts support and you believe we received personal information that should be deleted, contact us through the TripSplit App Store product page.
10. International use
Core App data remains on your device and is not transferred internationally by TripSplit. If you make or restore a purchase, contact support, enable Apple diagnostic sharing, or choose a third-party sharing destination, the information may be processed in countries other than your own — our purchase-management service provider, for example, processes purchase data in the United States — under the terms and safeguards of the relevant provider and applicable law.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy to reflect changes to the App, our practices, or applicable law. We will change the "Last updated" date and provide additional notice when required. If a future version adds accounts, cloud sync, remote OCR, analytics, advertising, payments, or other off-device processing, we will update this Policy and the App Store privacy disclosures before that version is released.
12. Contact
For privacy questions, requests, or complaints, contact the TripSplit developer through the contact details listed on the TripSplit App Store product page.
